I got a chance to see if AI could actually team up with me on an actual client project. So, I decided to try it out. Initially I thought it would be like having a super smart colleague to bounce ideas off of, but the results were nowhere close to my wildest expectations.
There's a large number of climbers in Milan and its rapidly growing. They use Facebook and WhatsApp to find other climbers. The task was to make a platform tailored to a climber's needs.
My usual goals were to understand the business needs, research the needs of climbers and define a core product offering. Then present this to the client, test it with users and finally design all the screens and assets for production.
✨My secondary goal was to see how much of this process I could delegate to AI tools and still maintain quality and speed.
Normally, I work with a team that includes me, a UX researcher, and 1-2 UX designers. But this time, I imagined using AI for all those roles, with me as the only human. It was like creating a virtual team where AI was my crew.

I played around with teaching AI to think like different members of a design team. I needed it to be analytical in one moment, like figuring out a journey for the user, and artsy the next, like choosing an aesthetic for the UI.
With my custom AI team, I did secondary research, created user personas, mapped out the user journey, nailed down the information architecture, identified core features and started wire-framing.
It was remarkable to see how quickly we could go from big ideas to something that started to look real.
Working on the UI with AI blew me away. It was way quicker than the old way of making moodboards. I was able to see results in very few iterations.
In this project, Midjourney performed slightly better than DALL-E.
Normally, I'm part of a bigger team, but with AI, I could see the same results by myself and right on time.
Looking back, I can't tell which parts are mine and which are the AI's – it felt like a true collaboration.
The conversational workflow of generative AI will have a big impact on product design in the future. Designers have to start thinking about their process in new ways.

Could Snapchat lenses help students grasp math concepts better and score higher in an actual school?
The team shortlisted a few math concepts to test the impact of AR on learning outcomes in U.S. schools.
I conceptualised and designed the AR experiences for this study using principles of game design and storytelling.
